Mumbai, Oct 26 – Music composer Lalit Pandit, one half of the celebrated duo Jatin‑Lalit, revealed an iconic behind‑the‑scenes moment about the creation of “Mehendi Laga Ke Rakhna” from the blockbuster 1995 film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ).

An old‑school creative sprint

While working on the track, legendary lyricist Anand Bakshi handed the crew a book and ordered the studio to silence itself. “No one should talk. Write whatever you feel,” he told them. The room filled with scribbled verses as Lalit, along with fellow composers and lyricists, produced about 25 drafts in just two hours. When the team felt stuck, Bakshi stayed upbeat, encouraging them to keep the two most striking verses he’d especially highlighted.

“That’s how we kept the magic of the song alive,” Lalit told the “Behind the Beats” podcast on Spotify. “Bakshi was the teacher that day for all of us.”

A lyricist’s trick to fit the star

Bakshi’s writing also involved a clever cut‑point for Shahrukh Khan’s entrance. He purposely composed the opening lines of “Mehendi Laga Ke Rakhna” to create a beat that matched the moment when SRK’s character arrives, tightening the music around the actor’s on‑screen presence.

DDLJ – a landmark for Bollywood

Released in 1995, DDLJ marked the directorial debut of Aditya Chopra, now the chief of India’s leading studio Yash Raj Films (YRF). The film’s music remains a cultural touchstone, loved across the Indian diaspora for its nostalgic melodies and themes of longing for home. DDLJ also launched the iconic on‑screen duo SRK and Kajol and gave budding talents like Karan Johar a chance to learn the craft on set.

Since that debut, YRF has produced blockbusters such as Chak De! India, Bunty Aur Babli, Ek Tha Tiger, Jawan, Pathaan, and War, and is preparing new releases like the upcoming drama Alpha with Alia Bhatt and Sharvari.

The story behind “Mehendi Laga Ke Rakhna” highlights why DDLJ’s music still feels fresh: a blend of heartfelt lyrics, unforgettable melodies, and a collaborative spirit that turns a simple idea into an enduring classic.
