Mark Ruffalo, the Hollywood star known for his Hulk role, recently shared fun behind-the-scenes stories from filming the first season of his new HBO series Task. At the show’s premiere, the 57-year-old actor opened up about how he got ready to play FBI agent Tom Brandis.
To nail the role, Ruffalo teamed up with retired FBI special agent Scott Duffey for some real-talk training. "The best FBI agents are full of empathy," Ruffalo revealed, explaining the key lesson he picked up about what makes these pros tick.
When he wasn’t diving into agent prep, Ruffalo made the most of shooting in Philadelphia. He confessed to indulging in the city’s iconic food big time. "I ate a ton of Philly cheesesteak sandwiches," he laughed. "I just packed on the pounds!"
Joining Ruffalo in this gripping drama is Tom Pelphrey from Ozark, who plays Robbie—a family man with two kids who’s secretly running a criminal operation. The cast also features Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Thuso Mbedu, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, Raúl Castillo, Silvia Dionicio, and Phoebe Fox.
Set in Philly’s tough working-class neighborhoods, Task follows an FBI task force hunting down a wave of violent robberies led by an ordinary-looking dad. The seven-episode series comes from writer Brad Ingelsby (Mare of Easttown), who co-executive produces it with Ruffalo.
In the trailer, Ruffalo’s Tom gets the mission from FBI boss Kathleen (Martha Plimpton), who warns, "We need to find this crew before a turf war explodes." Meanwhile, Pelphrey’s Robbie spills his reason for the crimes to his partner: "I’m taking their money so we can have a better life."
Fans of crime thrillers and Ruffalo’s intense performances will love how Task blends heart-pounding action with real emotional depth. The series is already generating buzz for its authentic take on FBI investigations and Philly life.
