Kerala BJP leaders rush to pacify former spokesperson after allegations of ‘abandoning’ workers

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala is in crisis after former party spokesperson M. S. Kumar posted explosive claims on Facebook linking hidden financial wrongdoings within the BJP to the death of Thiruvananthapuram unit secretary and councillor K. Anilkumar.

Kumar says unpaid loans and a lack of accountability pushed Anilkumar, a 58‑year‑old cooperative society manager, toward suicide on September 20. In his post, he explained that almost 70 % of borrowers in the cooperative come from the BJP, and 90 % of those who haven’t repaid are party members. According to him, the pressure from depositors who demanded repayment pushed Anilkumar over the edge.

The BJP has responded by reaching out to Kumar in a bid to calm the situation and keep the story from spiraling further. Senior state BJP leaders have reportedly begun private talks with him, urging him not to publish the names of alleged borrowers or the amounts they owe.

Anilkumar’s death triggered a sharp reaction from the state’s Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M), which called for the BJP to take moral responsibility. The incident has highlighted larger concerns about money management within the party’s local units.

In a bold statement, Kumar promises to disclose the names of senior BJP office‑bearers, cell convenors and recent members who he claims were defaulting on loans. He says he has tried to get them to repay, but nothing changed. “Anilkumar was a sincere politician with great potential,” he wrote, adding that the financial burden and the lack of support turned him to despair.

Kumar also blamed the media for stoking the crisis. “A few people spread false news that our society had collapsed,” he claimed, noting that a wave of rumors caused borrowers to stop repayments, depositors to rush withdrawals and those Anilkumar trusted to abandon him. He said real political commitment should involve honoring loans, not just sending flowers after death.

The BJP has yet to issue an official statement. The party’s current crisis is unfolding on social media and the streets of Thiruvananthapuram as both the party’s leadership and its supporters try to manage the fallout and seek a resolution.
