Craig McMillan named full-time assistant coach for New Zealand women’s cricket
Wellington: Exciting news for Kiwi cricket fans! Craig McMillan has officially become a full-time assistant coach for the New Zealand women’s cricket team, White Ferns. Just over a year ago, he joined the team on a part-time basis, and now he’s committed to helping the women’s team reach new heights.
The former New Zealand cricket star and experienced batting coach will work alongside head coach Ben Sawyer and fielding expert Dean Brownlie. His main focus will be on coaching the team’s batting and fielding, as well as supporting the Female Players of Interest programme. McMillan’s full-time role starts this week, and he’s ready to dedicate himself completely to women’s cricket.
McMillan, who was part of the Kiwi squad when they won the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup in the UAE, expressed his happiness about the new role. “I’m over the moon to be the full-time assistant coach for the White Ferns,” he said. “Women’s cricket is growing rapidly, and I’m excited to help our talented players achieve their goals. It’s been an incredible journey over the past year, and I’ve loved every moment working with a team that continues to improve and do great things on the world stage.”
He also shared updates on the team’s preparations for the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. The White Ferns have been working hard, traveling to Chennai in August for a special training camp to get used to spin-friendly pitches similar to Indian conditions. This was part of their strategy to prepare for the tournament, which is scheduled for October-November in India.
“The team has had a busy few months with various training camps, including the one in Chennai, to get ready for the World Cup,” McMillan said. “It’s always exciting to go back to India and compete in such a big tournament. The players are really pumped and eager to perform.”
The New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced that the final squad for the Women’s World Cup will be revealed on September 10. Fans are eagerly waiting to see the team that will represent New Zealand on the world stage.
