On December 4 in Jodhpur, the LatestNewsX report says that pomegranate farmers across Rajasthan are feeling a spark of hope, as the Central Arid Zone Research Institute (CAZRI) rolled out two fresh varieties.
Housed in Jodhpur, the institute has been pushing hard into research and development to devise new strategies that boost fruit yields and, in turn, raise farmers’ earnings.
Its latest releases, the saffron and super saffron pomegranates, have stoked the belief that growing this crop could bring a significant boost to local incomes.
To make the most of these new varieties, CAZRI is running a range of training sessions that teach farmers modern cultivation methods and advanced techniques.
Senior scientist Dr Om Prakash Meena told LatestNewsX that the institute’s pomegranate project began in 2010 and has been steadily expanding.
He added that the West Rajasthan region has seen a steady rise in pomegranate farming, with farmers earning far more than they do from conventional crops, often multiplying their income.
The institute notes that the best yields come from areas where water is saline, and that radiation‑treated types such as Saffron and Super Saffron are now widely cultivated. The market for tissue‑culture‑derived planting material has also grown sharply.
Describing the fruit as “red gold,” Dr Meena explained that it remains a powerful income source because it delivers high‑quality produce at low input costs.
As a government body, CAZRI’s mission is to slash planting costs while elevating fruit quality. Experts provide farmers with detailed guidance on water use, fertiliser schedules, and other agronomic practices so they can adopt the most efficient methods.
These efforts have reshaped pomegranate farming in Western Rajasthan, opening new pathways for economic empowerment among local growers.
