Guillermo del Toro would ‘rather die’ than use Generative AI in films

Los Angeles – Guillermo del Toro, the Oscar‑winning director known for Pan’s Labyrinth, says he will not use artificial intelligence in any of his films.
He told NPR that he would “rather die” than rely on generative AI, a technology that can create images, music, and even scripts.
In the interview, the 61‑year‑old director compared the hype around AI to the arrogance of the mad scientist in his Netflix adaptation of Frankenstein. “I don’t want to use AI,” he said. “I’ve let people know I’d rather die than use it.”
Del Toro said the real danger isn’t the tools themselves, but “natural stupidity” that can lead to misuse. He warned that tech entrepreneurs can act like Victor Frankenstein, building something without thinking about the consequences.
The director’s new film, Frankenstein, stars Jacob Elordi, Oscar Issac, Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz and Ralph Ineson. Netflix will release it on November 7. The director’s stance adds a sharp voice to the debate over AI in Hollywood and beyond.
