In Arunachal Pradesh, India, the push for the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) is picking up steam. Parong village just joined the effort by signing a key Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state government. This deal focuses on preparing the project’s Pre-Feasibility Report (PFR), a big step toward bringing hydropower and development to the Siang region.
The signing happened in Itanagar on September 22, with high-profile leaders on hand. Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein attended, along with Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Ojing Tasing, Chief Secretary Manish Kumar Gupta, SUMP Development Corporation Chairman Tamiyo Taga, and other top officials like Commissioners Sonam Chombey and Ankur Garg.
Chowna Mein praised the move, calling it a “significant step forward.” He noted that more than 62 households in Parong backed the MoU, showing the villagers’ strong commitment to growth. “This reflects our shared belief that the project will bring real development and fresh opportunities to the area,” Mein said.
Local voices echoed that excitement. Taram Jerang, a Parong resident at the signing, shared his hopes: “We believe supporting this MoU for the PFR will lead to genuine progress in our village.”
Another villager, Tamat Pabin, added, “By backing the PFR process, we’re paving the way for a brighter future in Siang and all of Arunachal Pradesh.”
SUMP earned national project status from the Indian government back in 2008. Experts see it as vital for boosting India’s water security and energy needs through sustainable hydropower.
Parong’s support builds on earlier endorsements from four nearby villages: Pangkang, Riga, Riew, and Begging. As momentum grows for SUMP in Arunachal Pradesh, the project aims to blend cultural protection with modern advancements, helping secure the nation’s water and energy future.
