Accused DC pipe-bomber Brian Cole Jr.’s dad once defended by famous civil rights attorney who repped George Floyd

Ben Crump, the civil‑rights lawyer famous for standing up for George Floyd’s family, once took on Brian Cole Sr., the father of the man now accused of planting pipe bombs outside the Democratic and Republican National Committee offices in Washington, D.C. In late 2021, Crump defended Cole Sr. in a racial‑discrimination dispute over a Tennessee bail‑bond company that a local prosecutor tried to shut down, alleging the owners were Black. After Crump’s brief engagement, the block on the company was lifted.

The case resurfaced when Cole Sr.’s son, Brian Cole Jr., was taken into custody by the FBI on Thursday for allegedly placing a series of pipe bombs around the DNC and RNC buildings on January 5, the eve of the Capitol riots. Crump’s office made it clear that the firm has never represented the younger Cole in any legal matter.

Crump, often dubbed “Black America’s Attorney General” by Rev. Al Sharpton, has been a leading voice in a number of high‑profile civil‑rights suits, including those of Trayvon Martin, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery.
