‘Vocal for Local’: Gifted ‘Swadeshi’ things to world leaders during G-20 Summit, says PM Modi

In his 128th episode of the popular radio show Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reminded listeners that the spirit of “Swadeshi” – the push for locally made goods – had been at the core of his decisions during the recently concluded G‑20 Summit. When the time came to present gifts to visiting world leaders, he made sure every item reflected that philosophy. Among the gifts he handed over were a bronze Nataraja statue to the President of South Africa, showcasing exquisite Chola‑era craftsmanship from Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu; a silver horse to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, echoing Udaipur’s renowned metalwork; and a silver Buddha replica for Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, celebrating the famous silver art of Telangana and Karimnagar. Italian leader Giorgia Meloni received a silver mirror embroidered with floral motifs, highlighting traditional Karimnagar metalworking, while Australian PM Anthony Albanese was presented with a brass uruli from Mannar, Kerala.
“The aim was to put Indian crafts, art, and traditions on a global stage and give our artisans a worldwide platform,” Modi said. He also noted that millions across India have embraced the “Vocal for Local” mantra. As people have started choosing domestic products for their holiday shopping, the country’s return to Swadeshi momentum is evident, he added, with shopkeepers and young people alike supporting the movement. With Christmas and New Year’s shopping on the horizon, Modi urged citizens to remember: buy only what is made in the country and sell only what bears the hard work of an Indian craftsman.
