“Is it a Joke?” Bhupendra Singh Hooda slams Haryana Govt over compensation for crop losses

Haryana Floods: Bhupinder Singh Hooda Slams Government Over Low Crop Compensation

In a sharp attack on the Haryana government, former Chief Minister and Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda has called out the state for offering peanuts as compensation to farmers hit hard by Yamuna river floods. Speaking to reporters in Rohtak on Friday, Hooda pointed fingers at illegal mining along the river, which he says caused water to flood fields and destroy crops across the state.

"Illegal mining let Yamuna waters rush into farmlands, causing massive damage," Hooda said. He mocked the government’s relief package, especially the crop loss compensation of just Rs 7,000 to Rs 15,000 per acre. "Farmers spend Rs 35,000 on seeds alone, plus fertilizers and land rent that can hit Rs 60,000-70,000 per acre. This so-called help is a total joke!"

Haryana has been battling floods this year, with heavy rains and the swollen Yamuna river wreaking havoc in several districts. The crisis has left farmers, villagers, and livestock owners counting their losses from crop damage, flooded homes, and more.

What the Government Announced for Flood Relief

Back on September 8, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini rolled out a relief fund to help flood-affected areas. The state set aside Rs 3.26 crore from its reserve to provide quick aid. This money covers essentials like food, clothes, temporary shelters, tents, animal fodder, fuel for transport, and even drainage work in rural spots.

Here’s a breakdown of the flood compensation in Haryana for different kinds of losses:

  • Crop Loss Compensation: Farmers get Rs 7,000 to Rs 15,000 per acre, based on how much damage the floods caused. But as Hooda highlighted, many say this barely scratches the surface of real costs.

  • Loss of Life: Families of those who died in the floods receive Rs 4 lakh.

  • Injuries and Disability: If someone ends up with 40-60% disability, they get Rs 74,000. For over 60% disability, it’s Rs 2.5 lakh.

  • Damaged Houses: Fully destroyed homes in plain areas qualify for Rs 1.2 lakh, while those in hilly regions get Rs 1.3 lakh. Partial damage? Pucca houses with 15% loss fetch Rs 10,000, and kutcha homes get Rs 5,000.

  • Shops, Businesses, and Industries: For village setups hit by 100% loss, relief scales with the damage amount. Up to Rs 1 lakh loss means Rs 1 lakh aid; Rs 1-2 lakh loss gets Rs 1.75 lakh; it goes up to Rs 3.05 lakh for Rs 4-5 lakh losses, plus 10% extra for anything over Rs 5 lakh.

  • Livestock Losses: Milch animals like buffaloes, cows, or she-camels are worth Rs 37,500 in compensation. Sheep, goats, or pigs get Rs 4,000. Non-milch animals such as camels, horses, or bulls receive Rs 32,000, and poultry losses are covered up to Rs 10,000.

Hooda’s outburst has sparked fresh debate on illegal mining in Haryana and whether the flood relief package truly helps those suffering from Yamuna floods. As the state works to drain water and rebuild, farmers hope for better support to get back on their feet. Stay tuned for updates on Haryana flood compensation and government response.
