Tannishtha Chatterjee’s directorial debut, Full Plate, is set to steal the spotlight at the Indian Film Festival of Sydney’s opening night. The actress-turned-filmmaker shared that this heartfelt project emerged from her own "struggle, grit, and hope," making it a deeply personal triumph.
Starring Kirti Kulhari in the lead, the film also features talented actors like Sharib Hashmi, Monica Dogra, and Indraneil Sengupta. Full Plate recently earned a spot for its world premiere at the prestigious Busan International Film Festival 2025, adding to the buzz around Indian cinema.
The story dives into the life of a Muslim homemaker in Mumbai. When her husband suffers a life-changing accident, she steps up to support the family, sparking his insecurities and her own empowering journey of growth. It’s a tale of resilience that promises to touch hearts.
Reflecting on the Sydney premiere, Tannishtha opened up: "In the middle of one of the hardest chapters of my life, it meant everything to know that stories still matter. When Mitu asked me to open the Indian Film Festival of Sydney with Full Plate, I felt both humbled and profoundly grateful. This film was born out of struggle, grit, and hope, and sharing it with the Sydney audience feels like bringing the journey full circle."
Festival director Mitu Bhowmick Lange AM couldn’t hold back her excitement. "There’s something deeply resonant about opening with Full Plate. Tannishtha’s courage and determination to tell this story despite overwhelming odds reflect exactly why Indian cinema matters—it does more than entertain; it reveals, heals, and challenges."
The festival makes a grand return after a break, running from October 9 to 11 with three days packed with captivating films and storytelling.
Adding an emotional layer, Tannishtha’s close friend and National Award-winning actress Shabana Azmi celebrated her milestone on Instagram on September 15. Shabana posted photos with Tannishtha, Sandhya Mridul, Divya Dutta, and Urmila Matondkar, captioning it: "To Tiger Tan as she heads to Busan International Film Festival with her directorial venture which she completed during her cancer treatment. You rock of Gibraltar."
Just last month, Tannishtha, known for her powerful roles in films like Parched and Angry Indian Goddesses, bravely revealed her diagnosis of stage 4 oligo metastatic cancer. Her story of perseverance continues to inspire fans worldwide as Full Plate takes center stage in the world of Indian films.
