Agnikul launches India’s first additive manufacturing hub for rockets

India’s space tech scene just got a big boost. Agnikul Cosmos, a homegrown company, unveiled its groundbreaking Large Format Additive Metal Manufacturing (LFAMM) Unit in New Delhi. This facility marks a major leap for Atmanirbhar Bharat in space technology, focusing on 3D printing for aerospace and rocket systems.

For the first time in India, teams can now 3D print massive rocket components up to one meter tall. The setup creates a complete workflow—from design and simulation to printing, post-processing, and finishing. It promises better quality, stronger supply chains, and cuts rocket-building costs by up to 50%.

Dr. V. Narayanan, Secretary of the Department of Space and ISRO Chairman, joined Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, to kick off the facility. Agnikul Cosmos shared the exciting news on X, calling it “a step forward towards an Atmanirbhar Bharat in space technology.” They highlighted India’s largest 3D metal printer for space-tech systems and a homebuilt de-powdering machine for reliable post-processing.

Thanks to this unit, Agnikul can now produce fully finished, flight-ready hardware in just days. “Agnikul started with the dream of making space accessible to everyone,” said Srinath Ravichandran, the company’s co-founder and CEO. “We’re advancing rocket manufacturing with precision and quality. By building our own full-scale machines, we can speed up space transportation systems and get our innovations—and our customers—into orbit faster.”

This isn’t Agnikul’s first milestone. In 2024, they launched the world’s first rocket powered by a single-piece 3D-printed engine: the Agnibaan SOrTeD (SubOrbital Technological Demonstrator). It was also India’s debut semi-cryogenic engine rocket, entirely designed and built at home. As an IIT Madras startup, Agnikul even holds a US patent for these innovative single-piece 3D-printed rocket engines.

With moves like these, India’s additive manufacturing in space is racing ahead, opening doors for faster, cheaper rocket innovation.
