B’desh: 4 more fatalities due to dengue raise this year’s death toll to 192

Bangladesh has seen four more deaths from dengue fever this week, pushing the total fatalities from the mosquito-borne illness to 192 in 2025 so far. Health officials shared this update on Sunday, highlighting the ongoing dengue outbreak in the country.

In the latest wave, 845 people landed in hospitals with symptoms of viral fever, mostly dengue. That brings the overall count of dengue cases in Bangladesh for 2025 to 46,051, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The new infections popped up across various regions, with the biggest numbers outside major city corporations in Barishal (166 cases), Dhaka (164), Khulna (101), Chattogram (91), and Rajshahi (54). Inside the cities, Dhaka South saw 112 cases, while Dhaka North had 97.

Looking back, dengue took a heavy toll last year too—575 people died from it in 2024. But 2023 remains the worst on record, with 1,705 deaths, alongside 321,179 confirmed cases and 318,749 recoveries. These numbers show why fighting the dengue outbreak in Bangladesh stays a top priority for public health.

To tackle this, the DGHS rolled out fresh guidelines for hospitals back on September 16. Every public hospital now needs to set up special wards just for dengue patients and form expert teams to handle care. “This will boost patient safety, cut down risks, and improve services overall,” said DGHS Director Abu Hossain Md Mainul Ahsan.

Hospitals must stock up on essentials like NS-1 tests, emergency support, and plenty of medicines for dengue treatment. They also have to keep patients in dedicated rooms or wards, with quick access to ICU if things get serious. Doctors and nurses get specific roles to ensure smooth handling.

The rules go further: Hospitals should create a board of specialists in medicine, pediatrics, and more to treat both dengue and chikungunya cases. Trained staff will work under this team, even for suspected patients showing up at outpatient clinics. Directors must reach out to local city corporations or municipalities to launch mosquito control drives and clean-ups around hospital areas.

On top of that, every hospital has to hold a weekly dengue coordination meeting every Saturday, led by the director, superintendent, and civil surgeon. These steps aim to ramp up the fight against the 2025 dengue surge and protect more lives in Bangladesh.
