K’taka Dy CM launches caste census in B’luru, urges people to ensure justice for future generations

Bengaluru, Oct. 4 – Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Congress state president D.K. Shivakumar urged residents in Greater Bengaluru to complete the state‑run caste census, a nationwide survey that tracks social and educational status.
Shivakumar, who also heads the Bengaluru Development Ministry, announced the launch in a press gathering near his Sadashivanagar home. He said the survey has begun today in the Greater Bengaluru Area (GBA), and that he had already filled out the required forms. “Everyone—no matter what caste they belong to—must join the survey and give honest answers,” he told reporters.
He acknowledged that many people find the questionnaire confusing. “I looked at the questions today,” he explained. “Some need to be simpler because urban people have little patience.” He also said that the government has instructed survey teams to handle sensitive personal questions with care.
Shivakumar cut a record on field‑work, promising that residents who fear outing personal details are not forced to answer anything they’re uncomfortable with. “The court has said no one can be forced to answer,” he said. “It’s up to each person to decide what they share.”
When reporters asked how to manage complaints about the online portal, he replied that technical hiccups will be fixed and that citizens can still submit their information through the app. “We will do what is needed to finish the survey,” he said.
Some people in Bengaluru still hesitate, citing concerns that the census could affect voter lists. Shivakumar dismissed those worries. “The Central government makes the voter rolls in the end,” he said. “We will keep working on the census.”
The survey has made steady headway nationwide. According to a recent statement from the Chief Minister’s office, out of a target of 1.43 crore households (1,43,77,978), 81.27 lakh households (8,127,206) were visited by October 2. A total of 3.42 crore people (3,42,31,444) have been covered, reaching a 63.03 % completion rate.
In a broader context, state officials noted that Karnataka is facing a tax shortfall of 15,000 to 20,000 crore rupees, and that the state may seek Supreme Court relief if the central government fails to address these fiscal grievances.
The caste census is expected to finish by the end of the year, giving policymakers and social activists a detailed picture of inequity across Karnataka’s communities.
