In Perambra, Kerala, a brawl broke out on Friday night as workers from the Congress‑led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI‑M) clashed, forcing police to fire lathis and tear gas.
The fight left many hurt, including Congress MP Shafi Parambil, Kozhikode District Congress Committee president Praveen Kumar, and several other UDF workers. Deputy Superintendent of Police Hariprasad also got injured.
The violence was sparked by rising tension over the CKG College Union elections. The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the Kerala Students Union (KSU) fought the day before, with both sides marching through town. Stone‑throwing and scuffles followed, and police had to step in to break up the crowd.
Parambil, who was seen with blood on his face, said the state government could not stay silent about the Sabarimala gold robbery by using violence. “Police can’t think they can get away with attacking our workers,” he told reporters.
Opposition leader V.D. Satheesan blamed CPI‑M for the attack, saying police bulldozed the workers with batons on the party’s orders and urged the government not to hide from the Sabarimala scandal. He warned that the UDF could face a larger defeat in the coming elections.
Former Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan also slammed the CPI‑M, saying the Left government under Pinarayi Vijayan is “caught on the wrong foot” and has turned to its usual violent tactics amid two upcoming elections.
The police’s use of tear gas and batons has drawn criticism, and local leaders are demanding a clearer explanation of what happened in Perambra and how the law will be enforced in the future.
