Mumbai (October 12 – ) – Actor and writer Saurabh Shukla shared memories of shooting on the set of the 2001 Bollywood political action film Nayak: The Real Hero, where he worked alongside legendary actor Amrish Puri. The role, co‑written and directed by Shankar and produced by A M Rathnam, also featured star Anil Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, Paresh Rawal, Johnny Lever, and Puri in a villainous turn.
Shukla recalled how Puri’s humility and focus left a lasting impression. “I was thrilled to land a role in a big film,” he said. “I met Amrish Puri for the first time on set, and the experience was amazing.” He added that Puri didn’t have a secretary or a driver, managing all his work himself.
One anecdote that stood out was Puri’s policy of charging one rupee more than the hero for his scenes. “He’d proudly say, ‘I’m not crazy, I earn a little extra and give it back to my crew,’” Shukla explained. “That’s why I use my own car on set.” The actor’s simplicity and generosity made the set feel comfortable for everyone.
Puri’s career spanned more than two decades, with memorable villain roles in films such as Vidhaata, Shakti, Hero, Meri Jung, Nagina, Shahenshah, and Tridev. Known worldwide for his powerful presence and distinctive voice, Puri passed away on January 12 2005. His legacy continues in classic Bollywood films.
Saurabh Shukla has earned recognition for roles in Satya, Yuva, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Barfi!, Jolly LLB, and, of course, Nayak. He said working with Puri and Kapoor energized him and deepened his understanding of the craft.
The interview, conducted by , highlights both the professionalism of a legendary star and the camaraderie that film sets can bring. It reminds viewers how great performances stem from a supportive, high‑energy environment and a shared passion for storytelling.
