A 9‑year‑old girl in Hanceville, Alabama, suffered severe injuries after a blue‑heeler mauled her. The attack happened on Nov. 7 outside the family’s apartment, where the child was sitting with her 13‑year‑old sister.
The dog, being walked by another child, sprang forward and clamped its jaws on the girl’s face. A nearby teenager tried to stop the animal by punching it, but the dog broke free and bit the teen’s back before turning on the younger victim. The girl screamed, and the scene turned chaotic as neighbors watched the terrifying struggle.
The 9‑year‑old, Delyla McCay, had to be airlifted to Children’s Hospital for emergency treatment. Doctors stitched her face—nose, mouth, cheeks and upper lip—shoulders and back. She also received a rabies shot and will need plastic‑surgery follow‑up. The family’s GoFundMe page shows dozens of stitches and a news clip of Delyla’s bruised face.
“I’ve never dealt with something like that,” Delyla’s mother, Katie McCay, told the local media. “My daughter is just sitting there, she wasn’t doing anything to the dog.”
While Delyla is out of the hospital and on the road to recovery, her parents still feel anger and shock. “I’m pretty angry now,” Katie said. “It’s hard for everyone.”
Animal control officials later put the dog down. Tests confirmed the animal was not up to date on its shots. The investigation into how the attack started is still ongoing.
