1st ODI: I visualise the game a lot, it helps me relax and play out there, says Kohli after helping India beat SA

Ranchi, Nov 30 (LatestNewsX) – Virat Kohli made his comeback in spectacular fashion, smashing a hundred in India’s opening ODI against South Africa at the JSCA International Stadium Complex. His usual blend of rigorous fitness work and mental rehearsal proved essential, allowing him to stay sharp on a pitch that behaved predictably for the first 20–25 overs before giving way.

India laid down a strong foundation, powered largely by Kohli’s 135 off 120 balls. Co‑captain Rohit Sharma added 57 from 51 deliveries, while K.L. Rahul chipped in with 60 off 56. The more experienced duo compiled a fluent partnership of 136 runs, shifting the momentum and setting up a sizable 398 for 8 off the full 50 overs.

In the chase, the hosts batted out a respectable 332, and thanks to solid contributions from Matthew Breetzke (72 off 80), Marco Jansen (70 off 39) and Corbin Bosch (67 off 51), India clinched a 17‑run win. It was a tight encounter, but India’s bowlers kept the pressure on.

Kohli dominated the scoreboard, striking 11 fours and seven sixes. “Today was really nice to get into the game like that. Pitch played decently for 20-25 overs before slowing down. I just wanted to play the ball and enjoy the game of cricket. It was about enjoying, and when you get a start, then the experience kicks in, and you’re able to build an innings,” he said, a performance that earned him Player of the Match honours.

When asked about his pre‑series routine, Kohli admitted he’s not keen on extensive preparations. “I’ve never been a believer in a lot of prep. All my cricket has been mental. I work physically very hard, as long as my fitness levels are up, and then you visualise batting and feeling well, it’s good. I wanted to get hold of conditions in Ranchi,” he explained after the game.

He further elaborated on how visualisation keeps him ready for the ODI format after a few months away. “I visualise the game a lot. When I think about the game, if I see myself being intense and sharp, I know I can relax and play out there. I’ve played 300-odd ODI games and so much cricket; if you’re in touch with the game and are able to hit balls in practice, if you bat for an hour or two in the nets, you know you’re good. If you’re out of form, you want to play more in the nets. Other than that, it’s about being mentally ready and enjoying the game,” he said.
