New Delhi – Union Health Minister JP Nadda spoke to a room full of fresh‑faces at the 50th Annual Convocation of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. He congratulated the new doctors and praised AIIMS for leading India in medical science and patient care.
Nadda highlighted the growing role of technology in health. “AIIMS is at the forefront of AI, genomics, precision medicine and telehealth,” he said. “Technology can improve diagnosis and bring smiles to patients, but the human touch and compassion must stay in the corner office.”
The minister reminded the graduates that, no matter how advanced tech becomes, doctors still need empathy, ethics and innovation.
India’s health‑care surge
- AIIMS: From one campus at the end of the last century, India now has 23 AIIMS hospitals and research centres across the country.
- Medical colleges: The number of institutions has jumped from 387 to 819 in the last decade.
- Student seats: Undergraduate places have grown from 51,000 to 129,000, and postgraduate spots from 31,000 to 78,000. Nadda added that an extra 75,000 seats will be added in the next five years.
These figures, he said, show a clear commitment to expanding quality medical education and access to care nationwide.
Health outcomes that matter
Nadda pointed out key gains in India’s public‑health record: lower maternal and child mortality rates, reduced under‑five deaths, and significant progress in tackling tuberculosis.
A call to the next generation
Professor V.K. Paul of Niti Aayog urged the graduates to consider careers in academia. He spoke of the responsibility to give back to the communities that raised them. “Let excellence be your daily routine and innovation your guiding star,” he urged.
In short, the minister’s speech was a blend of celebration, encouragement, and realistic goals—all aimed at keeping India’s health system strong while embracing new technology and human compassion.
