Agartala, Tripura – On Monday, Chief Minister Manik Saha said the government’s top priority is to upgrade health facilities and push the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) into the country’s top 10 medical schools.
Saha, who also heads the state’s Health and Family Welfare portfolio, called for teamwork to raise the college’s standards. “We need all hands on deck if AGMC is going to join the best medical schools in India,” he told reporters. “The government can’t do it alone.”
The CM unveiled several new projects that already started at AGMC and the nearby Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital. The critical‑care building and a specialized communicable‑disease unit are set to open soon, along with a 20‑bed special ward at GBP and an inter‑departmental call‑management system.
“There are currently 400 MBBS seats across Tripura’s three medical colleges,” Saha said. “Students must score higher to keep the quality of education up. Some brokers even try to steer patients from our hospitals to places outside the state, so we’re putting controls in place to stop that.”
Saha also highlighted surgical advancements. The state has successfully performed eight hip replacements, knee replacements, and other major procedures. AGMC now offers nine super‑specialty services at a cost of about ₹250 crore, and four more services are in the pipeline. “We need more funds for this,” he said.
During a recent meeting with Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda in New Delhi, the CM reported that the central government has agreed to purchase essential medical equipment.
Saha, a dentist by training, urged doctors to sharpen their skills and expand their expertise. He noted that the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region has already earmarked nearly ₹192 crore to raise AGMC’s national profile, and another ₹202 crore has been set aside for the dental college’s infrastructure.
Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, the ONGC Tripura asset manager, medical education director, and several senior doctors attended the briefing. The CM’s goal is clear: turn Tripura’s health system into a model of quality and innovation.
