Kim Kardashian’s health got a shocking twist in the Season 7 premiere of “The Kardashians.” The 45‑year‑old reality star learned that a doctor’s MRI discovered a tiny aneurysm in her brain. When asked why it happened, the family’s medical team blamed stress – a pointing finger at the drama of her divorce and co‑parenting with former husband Kanye West.

What is a brain aneurysm?

A brain aneurysm is a weak spot in an artery that bulges and fills with blood. It’s a silent danger that can burst suddenly, often with no warning. In the United States about 6.8 million people – roughly one in 50 – have an aneurysm. Most people don’t know they have one until it’s seen on a scan for another reason or it ruptures.

When do you feel something’s wrong?

Small aneurysms usually cause no symptoms. But when they pressure nearby nerves, you might notice:

  • Pain above or behind one eye
  • Blown‑out pupil or vision changes
  • Numbness on one side of the face
  • Seizures

The classic sign of a ruptured aneurysm is a sudden, severe headache – often described as the worst pain of your life. Other urgent clues include:

  • Stiff neck
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Confusion or drowsiness
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Fainting or loss of balance

If you or someone you know experiences these symptoms, seek emergency care right away.

How dangerous can it be?

A ruptured aneurysm is a medical emergency. About half of all ruptured aneurysms kill the patient, and most survivors suffer permanent brain damage or neurological problems. In the U.S. roughly 30,000 people suffer a ruptured aneurysm each year – a happening every 18 minutes. Worldwide, aneurysms claim close to 500,000 lives annually, with half of those victims younger than 50.

Who is at risk?

Certain risk factors raise the likelihood of an aneurysm:

  • Genetic conditions like fibromuscular dysplasia or Ehlers‑Danlos syndrome
  • A family history of aneurysms
  • Smoking, heavy alcohol use, or drug abuse
  • Chronic high blood pressure
  • Past head injury

Women, especially between 30 and 60, are more commonly affected.

Can stress cause aneurysms?

Stress isn’t a direct cause, but chronic stress can raise blood pressure and damage blood vessels, increasing the chance that an aneurysm will form or rupture. Emotional stress can trigger blood‑pressure spikes that may precipitate a rupture.

What does treatment look like?

Not every aneurysm needs surgery. Small, asymptomatic ones are usually monitored with regular imaging scans and lifestyle changes—stop smoking, keep blood pressure in check. If an aneurysm leaks or ruptures, immediate surgery is required.

Common surgical options are:

  • Clipping – a surgeon removes a small skull piece, clips the aneurysm’s feeding artery, and stops blood flow.
  • Endovascular coiling – a catheter delivers tiny coils or stents inside the aneurysm from a safe artery, sealing it off without opening the skull.

Kim Kardashian has not yet announced whether she plans to have these procedures done. The news has spurred many viewers to talk about their own health screen‑ups.
