At least 18 people lost their lives in a tragic road accident near the Matoda area in Phalodi subdivision, Jodhpur district, Rajasthan, police said. The crash involved a tempo traveller carrying passengers that slammed into a parked trailer truck. Six others were injured and taken to a hospital for treatment.
The incident happened early Sunday morning, when the vehicle, returning from a religious fair in Kolayat, Bikaner, collided with a stationary trailer on the side of the road. Police investigators say the tempo vehicle was moving at a high speed and could not spot the trailer in time because of low visibility in the morning hours. The front of the tempo was badly crushed, showing how hard the impact was.
The trailer that was hit was reportedly loaded with construction materials. Early reports by local police and residents show that the tempo had a number of pilgrims from Sursagar, Jodhpur, who were returning after visiting the annual Kolayat fair. The fatality figures were confirmed the next day, with official investigators noting the event is a major road safety concern in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur district.
Rescue teams rushed to the scene immediately after the crash. Local residents helped pull passengers from the wreckage while police and fire crews worked to secure the area. Bodies of the deceased were taken for post‑mortem examination, while the injured were transported to a nearby hospital. Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma expressed his sorrow at the loss of life in a heartfelt message on X, urging that all injured receive proper medical attention and offering condolences to the families.
A police case was registered on the incident, and investigators intend to examine both vehicles. Officials say they will check for problems such as brake failure or driver fatigue to determine the exact cause of the collision. Both vehicles will be inspected mechanically to identify any mechanical faults or other contributing factors.
The Jodhpur district authorities are working to identify all victims and inform the families. The crash highlights ongoing concerns about road safety and driver fatigue in Rajasthan. It also underscores the need for better visibility lighting and stricter speed limits on rural roads. The incident is one of the deadliest traffic accidents in the area and has sparked a broader conversation about preventing similar tragedies in the future.
