India, US actively working to resolve tariff issues: Jaishankar

New Delhi – At the Kautilya Economic Conclave, India’s external‑affairs minister S. Jaishankar said the country and the United States are actively working to resolve tariff disputes that have rattled trade links.

“The big part of our trade with the US is business as usual,” Jaishankar told the audience. “But the 50‑percent tariffs on Indian exports keep sticking around because we haven’t found a common ground.” He added that talks are still in progress and that both sides are looking for a solution that respects India’s red lines.

Jaishankar warned that ongoing tariffs, especially those affecting energy trade, put a strain on policymakers. “When tariffs become the centerpiece of trade, we lose sight of comparative and competitive advantages,” he noted.

Despite the hurdles, the minister stressed that overall trade between the two nations continues largely without disruption. “I don’t think the tariffs will affect every part of trade,” he said. “We’ll negotiate the issues that remain, but they won’t collapse the relationship.”

India has also signed free‑trade agreements with several Asian partners, though some of these economies are highly competitive. “We should focus on agreements with markets that don’t compete directly with us,” Jaishankar said, highlighting that supply‑chain realities often give China a foothold.

The minister concluded that India and the United States remain in active dialogue and that the broader trade relationship will not be derailed by the current tariff challenges.
