Situation in B’desh under Yunus direct threat to democratic values: Rights body

Paris, Dec 10 (LatestNewsX) – A prominent international human‑rights organization expressed deep concern on Wednesday about the worsening conditions in Bangladesh under the Muhammad Yunus‑led interim government.

JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) released a statement noting that while nations worldwide are observing International Human Rights Day—a celebration of shared ideals such as equality, dignity and freedom—the situation in Bangladesh is both alarming and represents a “direct threat to democratic values and the rule of law”.

Drawing on media reports and testimonies from human‑rights observers, JMBF warned that, although the interim administration pledged to uphold human rights, the rule of law and democracy, the use of authority and force by state‑backed actors against political, social and religious dissenters has surged to a deeply troubling level.

“Fundamental rights such as freedom of expression, political activity, assembly and democratic participation are being severely obstructed unless they favour the current government. In many cases, people are being detained unlawfully, implicated in fabricated cases and subjected to severe levels of repression,” the body said.

“Custodial torture, inhuman treatment, abuse of power by law enforcement agencies and deliberate medical negligence or denial of treatment in prisons leading to deaths have reached a deeply concerning stage,” the rights body stated.

JMBF highlighted that intimidation, harassment and targeted pressure on political activists, journalists, lawyers and human‑rights advocates point to a serious decline in the protection of human rights.

“When media freedom is shrinking and freedom of expression is being hindered by state and state‑backed mob control, it effectively amounts to the deprivation of citizens’ fundamental freedoms. Such conditions signal the moral decline of the state and also weaken the foundation of civil rights and democracy,” it stated.

The organization called on the international community to treat Bangladesh’s circumstances with seriousness and to avoid silence in the face of the interim government’s “well‑crafted false narratives”, even as grave human‑rights violations persist.

Asserting that diplomatic and legal measures are essential, JMBF declared, “International involvement in the protection of human rights has now become indispensable”.

It further urged the global community to step forward, applying pressure on the Yunus‑led interim government to safeguard the rights, freedoms and safety of the people and to hold those responsible for violations to account.
