Mumbai Monorail Glitch Leaves Passengers Stranded: Quick Rescue Saves the Day
A sudden technical snag brought the Mumbai Monorail to a halt early Monday morning in the busy Wadala area, stranding 17 passengers mid-ride. The good news? Everyone got out safely, with no injuries reported.
The drama unfolded around 7:16 a.m. between Antop Hill Bus Depot and GTBN Monorail Station, right in the heart of the morning rush. The monorail, packed with commuters, stopped dead due to an unspecified fault. But authorities jumped into action fast. By 7:45 a.m., the Mumbai Fire Brigade and other teams had evacuated all 17 people without a hitch.
In an official update, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) shared: "All 17 passengers were safely rescued by 7:45 a.m. The stuck monorail is now being towed by another one to clear the tracks." The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and local police also rushed to the spot to handle the chaos and check the faulty coach.
This isn’t the first time Mumbai’s monorail has hit a bump. Just last month, on August 19, a whopping 582 passengers got stuck near Mysore Colony between Chembur and Bhakti Park stations. The BMC’s Mumbai Fire Brigade stepped in again, using ladder vehicles called snorkels to rescue everyone safely.
Services took a hit during peak hours, but MMRDA says the monorail should be back to full speed soon after fixing the issue and towing away the problem coach. They’re planning a deep dive into what caused the glitch and will review maintenance to prevent future Mumbai Monorail disruptions.
Commuters breathed a sigh of relief over the speedy response but are calling for better reliability, especially when everyone’s rushing to work. If you’re a regular on the Mumbai Monorail route, keep an eye on updates from MMRDA or BMC for any delays. Stay safe out there!
