Pakistan: Alleged ‘death squad’ shooting in Kech sparks outrage in Balochistan

A shocking shooting in Pakistan’s Balochistan province has left residents on edge, with another life claimed by what locals call targeted violence. On Thursday, unidentified gunmen burst into a house in the Nazarabad area of Tump tehsil, Kech district, and fired at a man named Altaf, son of Ata. He died on the spot, and the attackers escaped before anyone could catch them, according to reports from The Balochistan Post.

Eyewitnesses and local sources say these armed men belong to so-called death squads—mysterious groups often accused of working with Pakistani security forces and intelligence agencies. These outfits have a dark history in Balochistan, linked to enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and scaring off anyone who speaks out against the system.

This isn’t an isolated case. In recent weeks, similar attacks have spiked across the Makran belt and other districts in Balochistan. The victims? Often political activists, their family members, tribal leaders, and other influential locals who challenge the status quo. The Balochistan Post highlights how these killings are creating a climate of fear.

Civil society groups, human rights activists, and political parties are furious. They blame the government’s lack of action for letting these death squads run wild, leaving ordinary people feeling helpless and unsafe. Despite cries for probes and crackdowns on these networks, nothing major has happened yet.

Balochistan’s troubles run deep. Enforced disappearances continue to haunt the region—some people get released after months, but others end up detained longer or killed in cold blood. This wave of human rights violations is fueling insecurity and breaking trust in the authorities. Without real steps toward justice and accountability, peace in Balochistan feels further away than ever.
