Charlie Puth keeps it old-school when crafting his hit songs. The 33-year-old pop star behind tracks like “We Don’t Talk Anymore” swears by handwriting his lyrics with a simple Bic 4-Color Pen. For him, typing words on a phone or computer just doesn’t cut it—it lacks that personal touch.
“I handwrite lyrics. I never type lyrics on my phone or a computer,” Puth told The Hollywood Reporter. “It just feels like the song isn’t a song if I type it in—it needs my personality. It’s just something mental.” He loves how the pen’s colors spark different ideas in his mind, so he packs it for tours, flights, and everywhere else.
Puth uses the colors strategically too. Red means strike it out for lyrics he doesn’t like—”Red’s bad,” he says. Green is his go-to for keepers: “Green means go. That’s usually a good lyric.” This colorful approach helps him bring songs to life in a vivid way.
The singer always hits the road with notebooks, pens, and even a small keyboard. That keyboard isn’t just for music—it’s a social lifesaver. “I have to have a little keyboard backstage,” Puth shared. “Sometimes I can’t talk. And if I have to meet a couple of people before I go on stage, I’ll just sit behind the little keyboard and play stuff as I’m talking. It actually helps me converse better.”
Puth’s been hard at work on fresh tracks and teases that new music drops soon. “I’m excited about music in general. I can’t share when, but I do plan on putting music out soon,” he said. “And when it does come out, I feel like a lot of question marks are going to be answered. A lot of things that I haven’t sung about.” Life has changed a ton since hits like “One Call Away” and “See You Again,” and he’s drawing inspiration from his everyday world to share those stories. Fans, get ready—Puth hopes to keep making music for years to come.
