Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has unveiled the new Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose Campus of Rabindranath Tagore University in Hojai, marking an exciting milestone for higher education in the state.
The state-of-the-art campus covers 82 bighas and was built with an investment of Rs 55.5 crore. It includes modern facilities like an academic block, administrative offices, and the Vice-Chancellor’s office. Several departments, such as Pharmacy and various science streams, have already moved from the old Hojai College to this new campus, which started functioning in 2019.
During the inauguration, CM Sarma recalled his 2016 promise to establish a university in Hojai. He expressed pride in watching the university grow rapidly, now with around 3,500 students enrolled and 35 different academic programs offered in just six years. He also announced an additional Rs 50 crore funding to further develop the campus and instructed local authorities to build a 1.5 km road connecting the university to the nearby National Highway for better access.
Sarma also shared that the local ITI (Industrial Training Institute) has been handed over to the university, creating what is now its third campus.
The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of modern education and urged students to learn about emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Semiconductors, and Augmented Reality. “In the future, those who don’t understand these innovations will be left behind,” he said.
Sarma highlighted the rising demand for courses in commerce, stock markets, and financial inclusion, urging Assam’s universities to focus on fostering entrepreneurship and innovation. He believes that with the right mix of modern education, entrepreneurship, and cultural values, Assam has the potential to become a leading state in India.
He also referenced the recent Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit, where investments worth Rs 1.40 lakh crore were attracted. These investments include a semiconductor plant in Jagiroad, a 3,200 MW power project in Dhubri, medical tourism initiatives in Guwahati, and bamboo-based ethanol production in Numaligarh. The CM pointed out that Assam’s youth need to prepare for jobs in these upcoming industries. Notably, Japan is also interested in recruiting 50,000 skilled workers from Assam.
The event was attended by Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, senior officials, Members of Parliament, MLAs, Vice-Chancellor Manabendra Dutta Choudhury, and other prominent guests.
This new campus signifies a big step forward in Assam’s education and economic growth, opening many opportunities for young students and future industries.
