Bhopal, Oct 7 – Governor Mangubhai Patel said the planet’s rising temperatures are a direct result of people messing with nature. He urged everyone to plant trees wherever a suitable spot can be found.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the state’s Wildlife Week, the Governor noted the Van Vihar National Park in Bhopal was the perfect backdrop for his message. “Forests and wildlife keep our ecosystem healthy,” he told the crowd. “That means rivers, climate and our own lives depend on them.” He called on parents and teachers to teach kids from a young age that humans and nature must coexist.
Patel highlighted a small but powerful example from a school in Kutch. A teacher couple and 400 students built a green wall of trees around their school. Kids helped plant saplings and even used leftover water from washing fruits and vegetables to keep the plants alive. “In four years they finished a complete boundary wall with tiny, steady contributions,” he said. “It shows that everyday actions add up and make a real difference.”
The Governor also shared that he spent 18 years as Gujarat’s Forest Minister before becoming the state’s Governor. Over the last four years, he has joined the Wildlife Week closing ceremonies every time.
He praised the theme of this year’s event – “From Conservation to Coexistence” – for pushing people to go beyond traditional wildlife protection and engage communities.
Patel thanked the forests department and local groups for extending environmental education to rural schools and neighborhoods. He also announced several new releases at the event: the 2024‑25 annual report from the Madhya Pradesh Tiger Foundation Society, a new biodiversity board lapel pin, the first Bhopal Bird Festival poster, a collection of grasses from Satpura Tiger Reserve in Narmadapuram, and a field guide to Madhya Pradesh birds produced by Bhopal Birds.
The Governor ended his speech by urging everyone to act now. “Plant a sapling today, protect a wildlife spot tomorrow. That’s how we fight global warming, protect our climate, and keep our forests thriving.”
