Chennai, Dec 11 (LatestNewsX) – The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced that Tamil Nadu is practically finished with its voter‑list revision. Thursday is the last day for people to send in their Special Intensive Revision (SIR) forms.
Even with a huge electorate, only about 4,000 voters still miss their SIR cards.
The SIR drive runs in nine states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal and Assam, plus three Union Territories such as Puducherry. It was supposed to end on Dec 4 but got a one‑week extension to make sure everyone can participate.
Now that the deadline has moved to Thursday, the ECI says 99.98 % of the forms are out in 12 states, and 99.59 % of the completed ones are already online.
Tamil Nadu’s progress is impressive. With 6.41 crore voters, the Commission reports that 99.99 % of its SIR cards have gone out, leaving only 4,201 voters who still need one. Of the cards that have been issued, 99.95 % are digitised, and just 26,967 voters have yet to mail back their finished forms.
Those who have submitted their SIR cards can confirm that their details were uploaded by visiting the SIR‑2026 section of the ECI site and entering their mobile number or voter ID.
The draft electoral roll will hit the public on Dec 16.
People who wish to request changes—adding new names, deleting old ones, or correcting details—have until Jan 15 next year to file. Voters turning 18 by Jan 1 use Form 6; overseas citizens use Form 6A; objections or deletion requests go through Form 7; address changes are made with Form 8.
After all submissions are processed, the finalized voter list will drop on Feb 14. Because some states haven’t wrapped up their SIR work yet, officials say more time may be granted. A formal decision will follow the ECI review meeting in New Delhi later today.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu has finished reorganising polling stations to keep the standard of one booth for every 1,200 voters. As part of this re‑layout, 6,648 new booths were added and 80 merged, bringing the state’s total polling places to 75,035.
