Former US Treasury Secretary, Harvard head hit by disclosures in Epstein files

New York, Nov. 18 – Congress is set to vote on Tuesday on whether to disclose all the files on Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier who died in 2019. The move comes as new leaks have put former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers—who also served as Harvard’s president— in the spotlight.

Emails released by the Senate suggest Summers admitted to seeking Epstein’s advice on how to impress a woman. Summery said he was “deeply ashamed” and will step back from public roles.

The legislation was pushed by Democrat Rep. Ro Khanna, who says the bills aim to expose the elite network tied to Epstein. The former billionaire, who managed assets for many other rich clients, built a web that reached politicians and power brokers.

President Donald Trump, who had long opposed releasing the files, relaxed his stance on Sunday. He said he had no problem with House Republicans voting to open the records, a sign that his hold over the GOP was weakening. Trump also claimed he had cut ties with Epstein decades ago.

The new leaker emails reveal that Trump greeted Epstein on his birthday, that Epstein said Trump may have known of wrongdoing, and that the former president denied any involvement with the victims. The messages do not link Trump to the girls Epstein trafficked.

Summers is the first prominent American figure now being scrutinized. His name has already appeared on the list of Epstein’s contacts, though the documents show no evidence of sexual crimes. The emails that surfaced were primarily erotic in tone and involved a woman who was meant to be an academic mentor.

The story follows a string of revelations that have already landed former British Prince Andrew – who was stripped of his royal title – and the Epstein case as a national scandal. The boy‑abuse crimes led to a federal trial before Epstein died in prison, with authorities saying his death was a suicide.

Harvard students and staff were quick to respond. Summers – who remains a Harvard faculty member and sits on several company boards, including Op‑AI – confirmed he will keep teaching at Harvard but thanked the public for his criticisms.

Politico reported that a White House official said that institutions where Summers is a board member should consider removing him, echoing Senator Elizabeth Warren’s call. The fallout underscores how Epstein’s former associates are now being reassessed amid the new Congressional debate over the release of all his records.
