In a fiery speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov slammed Israel’s aggressive moves, warning they could spark chaos across the entire Middle East.
Speaking during the 80th session on September 28, Lavrov pointed to Israel’s “illegal use of force” against Palestinians, along with actions targeting Iran, Qatar, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq. “This threatens to blow up the entire Middle East,” he declared.
Lavrov made it clear: Russia condemns the October 7 Hamas attack on Israelis. But he argued that tragedy doesn’t excuse Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza. “There’s no justification for the brutal killings of Palestinian civilians—just like there’s no excuse for terrorism,” he said. He highlighted the horrors in Gaza, where bombings and hunger are claiming children’s lives, hospitals and schools lie in ruins, and hundreds of thousands face homelessness in what he called collective punishment.
Lavrov didn’t stop there. He ripped into Israel’s plans to annex parts of the West Bank, labeling it a “state coup” that ignores UN resolutions for creating a Palestinian state. Turning to recent developments, he questioned why some Western governments took so long to recognize Palestine—announcements came months after initial hints. “Why wait? They must have hoped there’d soon be nothing left to recognize,” Lavrov suggested.
To cool rising Middle East tensions, Lavrov urged the international community to act fast. He pointed to a recent High-Level International Conference on Palestine, where leaders pushed for steps to halt escalation and support a two-state solution.
