India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, welcomed Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and his delegation during a week‑long visit to New Delhi that began on October 9. The meeting underscored the longstanding friendship between India and Afghanistan and highlighted new ways the two countries will work together.
Jaishankar announced six new projects for Afghanistan and praised the country’s solidarity after the Pahalgam terror attack. He also revealed that India will upgrade its Technical Mission in Kabul to a full embassy, a move that signals deeper diplomatic ties.
A key theme of the talks was sports, especially cricket. “Afghan cricket talent is truly impressive,” Jaishankar said. He confirmed that India is ready to double its support for Afghan cricket, hoping to help the team develop further on the global stage.
Afghanistan has become one of Asia’s top cricket teams, winning four ODI series in a row in 2024 against Ireland, South Africa, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe. Yet India remains unbeaten against Afghanistan in all major formats—ODIs, T20Is, and Tests—as of now.
Muttaqi’s visit marks the first high‑level Afghan delegation to New Delhi since the Taliban took over in August 2021. Afghan officials say the trip will open new opportunities for cooperation between Kabul and New Delhi. The United Nations allowed a temporary exemption from travel restrictions, letting Muttaqi stay in India from October 9 to 16.
India’s commitment to supporting Afghan cricket and strengthening diplomatic links demonstrates its broader strategy of fostering regional stability and cultural exchange.
