Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin kicked off Gandhi Jayanti celebrations in Chennai by laying flowers at a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, marking the leader’s 156th birth anniversary on Thursday.
Earlier, President Droupadi Murmu honored Gandhi at his memorial in Raj Ghat and paid respects to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri at Vijay Ghat, both on their birth anniversaries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined in, offering floral tributes to Gandhi at Raj Ghat as well.
Modi shared a heartfelt message on X, praising Gandhi’s courage and his timeless values of service and compassion. “Gandhi Jayanti is about paying homage to the extraordinary life of beloved Bapu, whose ideals transformed the course of human history,” Modi wrote. He added that Gandhi showed how courage and simplicity could drive massive change, and that India will keep following his path toward building a developed nation, or Viksit Bharat.
October 2 holds special meaning in India as Gandhi Jayanti, a day to celebrate the father of the nation’s non-violent fight for independence. Around the world, it shines as the International Day of Non-Violence, thanks to a 2007 United Nations resolution backed by more than 140 countries.
At the UN, leaders mark the day with speeches from the Secretary-General and events that tie Gandhi’s philosophy to today’s challenges. Recent observances have spotlighted global conflicts, stressing that Gandhi’s commitment to truth and non-violence outpowers any weapon.
In India, people across the country join in with prayers at Raj Ghat, cultural shows, school programs, and drives to spread Gandhi’s ideals of peace and equality.
Mahatma Gandhi, born on October 2, 1869, became the heart of India’s freedom movement. He championed Satyagraha—his strategy of non-violent resistance—and led iconic efforts like the 1930 Dandi March, where thousands marched to the sea to protest the British salt tax, and the 1942 Quit India Movement, calling for an end to colonial rule.
