On Thursday, a judge at the CBI Court in Ghaziabad handed down a verdict: an officer from the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) received a four‑year jail term and a Rs 50,000 fine, while a private individual was sentenced to three years behind bars and a Rs 10,000 penalty, the agency announced.
The accused parties identified were Binod Kumar, who served as an Assistant at the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, Divisional Office, Meerut, and Surendra Khurana (also known as Sunny Khurana), a private person.
The CBI stated that it filed the case on September 15, 2017, charging both men with soliciting and taking illicit benefits.
During his time as Assistant and later as District Coordinator at the Commission from 2016 to 2017, Binod Kumar allegedly teamed up with Surendra Khurana to accept a Rs 1,25,000 bribe for approving a fake loan application for a Cement Tiles Manufacturing Unit.
In a press release, the CBI explained that between November 21, 2016, and September 15, 2017—when Binod Kumar was posted as Assistant at the Divisional Office in Meerut and later as District Coordinator for Meerut and Shamli—he conspired with Surendra Khurana, a private person, to receive Rs 1,25,000 in exchange for processing an invalid loan request of Rs 15,57,600 for the establishment of the unit.
After the investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet on November 13, 2017, and the court formally framed the charges on January 15, 2018.
Following the trial, the court convicted both individuals and imposed the sentences outlined.
In related news, the CBI arrested an advocate, a Judicial Member of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) Jaipur Bench, and an appellant on Wednesday. They are accused of being part of a bribery rings that aimed to “settling appeals pending in the ITAT bench, Jaipur in favour of the concerned.”
These arrests were prompted by intelligence that uncovered an organized and systematic corruption network operating within the tribunal.
