Elon Musk suggests Ilhan Omar committed ‘treason’ with 2024 pro-Somalia remarks after Trump rants about lawmaker at rally
On Wednesday morning billionaire Elon Musk took to X to accuse Representative Ilhan Omar (D‑Minn., 43) of treason, citing remarks she made in January 2024 that critics said favored Somali interests over those of the United States. Musk posted the clip of Omar’s comments hours after President Trump’s tirade against the same lawmaker at a rally in Pennsylvania.
Trump’s profanity‑laden rant included the following lines, which Musk shared unchanged:
“I love this Ilhan Omar, whatever the hell her name is, with the little turban,” the president declared. “I love her. She comes in, does nothing but b—h. She’s always complaining. She comes from her country, where I mean, it’s considered about the worst country in the world, right?”
During the same speech, Trump urged the crowd at Mount Pocono, Pa. to “We ought to get her the hell out,” as supporters shouted “Send her back!” This set the stage for Musk’s later post.
Omar’s own statements from January 27, 2024, which warned that she would do everything in her power to block a sea‑access agreement between the breakaway Republic of Somaliland and landlocked Ethiopia, began circulating widely after Musk shared the clip. In an unofficial translation of her words, she asserted that the U.S. government would merely mirror the demands of Somali émigrés in America, pledging to protect Somali waters from perceived foreign encroachment.
The controversy sparked an angry reaction among members of Congress. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R‑Minn.) fired a blistering rebuke on X, calling Omar’s “appalling, Somalia‑first comments a slap in the face to the Minnesotans she was elected to serve and a direct violation of her oath of office.” He urged her to “resign in disgrace.”
In response to Trump’s remarks, Omar posted on X the following night: “Trump’s obsession with me is beyond weird. He needs serious help. Since he has no economic policies to tout, he’s resorting to regurgitating bigoted lies instead. He continues to be a national embarrassment.”
