Chennai International Book Fair 2026 sets global ambition with 100 nation participation

Chennai is buzzing with excitement as the Chennai International Book Fair (CIBF) prepares for its fourth edition in January 2026. Organizers aim to bring in publishers and literary agents from a whopping 100 countries, turning the event into a major global spot for sharing books and ideas.

As Asia’s youngest international book fair, CIBF has grown fast since it started. Last year’s 2025 edition drew folks from 64 countries, and the next one promises even bigger crowds and more connections.

Tamil Nadu School Education Secretary B. Chandra Mohan credits the fair’s rise to smart outreach. His team connected directly with groups like the African Publishers Network, Francophone countries, and Publishers Without Borders. “This hands-on approach has put Chennai squarely on the world publishing map,” he said.

To keep the momentum going, a state delegation heads to Germany this October for the Frankfurt Book Fair, the planet’s biggest gathering for book deals. They’ve lined up over 30 meetings with potential partners to translate Tamil classics and fresh works from the state’s textbook publisher into English and other languages.

A big push at Frankfurt will spotlight a new comparative etymological dictionary linking Tamil and Indo-European languages. The goal? Catch the eye of international publishers and European agencies.

Meanwhile, talks are heating up with UNESCO officials in Paris to bring back the UNESCO Courier magazine in Tamil. This publication, which fosters cultural chats, already runs in six languages worldwide.

On top of the fair, the Tamil Nadu government just unveiled a huge translation drive. Over the next three years, they’ll translate the ancient Thirukkural into 45 more languages. Tamil epics like Silappathikaram and Manimegalai will hit 25 new tongues in the same timeframe.

Plus, expect 500 Tamil books to shift into English within five years, paving the way for versions in even more foreign languages.

The 2025 fair sealed the deal with over 1,300 memorandums of understanding for translations and swaps. Now, CIBF 2026 looks set to solidify Chennai as a lively hub for worldwide literary and cultural teamwork.
