Al Pacino breaks silence on ex-girlfriend Diane Keaton’s death: She ‘brought me happiness’
Al Pacino has written a heartfelt tribute to Diane Keaton after she died of pneumonia on October 11. The 85‑year‑old film legend, best known for his role in The Godfather and his Oscar‑winning performance in Scent of a Woman, said the news left him “shaken” and “deeply saddened.”
Pacino and Keaton met on the set of The Godfather in the early 1970s and dated for nearly two decades. Their romance became a public favorite, but it ended in 1990 when Keaton asked Pacino to marry her and he declined. The couple remained friends and supporting each other even after the split.
In a personal essay posted on Deadline, Pacino reflected on how Keaton changed his life. “Diane was my partner, my friend, someone who brought me happiness and on more than one occasion influenced the direction of my life,” he wrote. “Although thirty‑plus years have passed since we were together, the memories remain vivid. With her passing, they return with a force that is both painful and moving.”
He praised Keaton’s “unmistakable energy” and said she “left a mark that cannot fade.” “She was unstoppable, resilient, and deeply human,” Pacino added. “I will always remember her. She could fly – and in my heart, she always will.”
Keaton’s family confirmed her death in a statement to People, noting the actress had been 79. She had been a celebrated star from The Godfather trilogy to The Devil Wears Prada, and her influence on film and fashion was widely admired.
Pacino has spoken publicly about wishing he had married Keaton. An unnamed source told the Daily Mail that after their breakup, Pacino often said, “If it’s meant to be, it’s never too late for a do‑over.” The source said he now regrets not seizing that chance, especially after Keaton’s death.
Despite the breakup, the two remained close. In 2017, Pacino appeared at the AFI Life Achievement Award Tribute for Keaton, telling her, “You’re an artist, Di. You’re a great artist. I love you, forever.”
Diane Keaton’s passing is a loss for fans, her family, and the film world. Her legacy as a groundbreaking actress and partner to Al Pacino continues to inspire.
