Every possible assistance provided to injured: Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Jaipur hospital fire

On Sunday night, a fire broke out in the Trauma ICU of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur, killing six people.
Union Minister of Culture and Jodhpur MP Gajendra Singh Shekhawat confirmed that rescue and relief work is underway. He posted a brief message in Hindi on X, calling the incident “extremely tragic and heart‑wrenching.”
Hospitals and the district administration are working quickly to help the injured. Shekhawat added that every possible assistance is being provided to patients still in need.
Families of the victims have gathered outside the hospital and are demanding answers. Some relatives said they saw a spark start the blaze, with a gas cylinder nearby. Smoke filled the ICU, forcing most to flee in a panic. One man, Puran Singh, recalled that his own patient had no chance to escape because the gates were shut and no fire‑extinguishing equipment was available.
“We didn’t know there was a fire in the ICU. I was downstairs to have dinner, and there was no equipment to douse the fire,” a mother of a patient told reporters.
The cause of the fire is suspected to be a short circuit, but the Rajasthan government has set up a six‑member committee to investigate the incident. The committee will be chaired by Iqbal Khan, Commissioner of the Medical Department, and will include officials from the Rajasthan Medical Education Society, the Jaipur Municipal Corporation and the SMS Medical College.
Officials say that the tragedy has raised serious questions about fire safety measures and emergency preparedness in state‑run hospitals. The investigation will look into the role of the hospital administration and whether better safety equipment could have prevented the loss of life.
