Union Minister Jitendra Singh visited the flood-hit areas of Kathua district in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday to check on the damage and relief efforts. He highlighted how modern nanotechnology-based water filter plants are now helping provide safe drinking water and stop any disease outbreaks in the region.
Talking to reporters amid the flooded fields, Singh shared that heavy rains have submerged large stretches of land and farmland. “Water has flooded the area, and farming fields are completely underwater,” he said. “The District Collector (DC) and other officials have been working hard to drain the water, but we still need to fully assess the damage. The good news is no one got physically hurt. Our top priority now is preventing diseases or epidemics in the aftermath.”
In a big step for flood relief in Jammu and Kashmir, Singh announced that innovative nanotechnology water filters have been set up in Kathua for the first time. These high-tech machines, costing around Rs 50 lakh each, can purify up to 3,000 litres of water—enough to supply an entire village. “Over the last 5-6 days, the DC and I looked into solutions and connected with institutes in Maharashtra,” he explained. “This is a game-changer for clean water access during floods.”
Looking ahead, Singh said they expect more help from industrialists to tackle both short-term and long-term needs. The DC has already prepared two reports on immediate aid and future support, which have been sent to higher authorities. “Prime Minister Modi has assured full assistance,” Singh added. “The whole government machinery, including the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and Jammu and Kashmir officials, is pitching in. We’ll get the right support as we move forward.”
Before heading to the flood zones, Singh made a kind gesture by organizing a free lunch for patients and their attendants at Government Medical College (GMC) Kathua.
The heavy rainfall chaos didn’t stop at Kathua. In recent days, continuous downpours have battered several parts of Jammu and Kashmir, causing rivers to swell and flash flood-like situations in multiple districts. On Thursday, authorities in Poonch district’s Mendhar sector started shifting families from Kalaban village, hit hard by ongoing landslides. A massive land drift has damaged over 25 homes, affecting nearly 70 families since last Saturday. Relief teams are on the ground to ensure everyone’s safety amid these Jammu and Kashmir floods.
