Commerce Secretary calls for diversification, innovation and value addition in coffee sector

India’s coffee exports have doubled in the last three years, reaching a strong $1.8 billion last fiscal year, even though the crop mainly grows in just three states: Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal shared this upbeat news during an event marking International Coffee Day in New Delhi.

Agrawal urged the coffee industry to team up and ramp up productivity to keep the momentum going. “We love working with all stakeholders to diversify production, add value right here in India, and earn premium prices on the global market,” he said.

He stressed the need for smart solutions to make coffee farming a smart, profitable choice for India’s young farmers. “As a government, we want to help the industry tackle these issues so production becomes more predictable, stable, and productive,” Agrawal added. “That way, it turns into a solid long-term investment for the next generation.”

The secretary also pointed out key challenges in Indian coffee production, like pest and disease management. Since much of the coffee grows alongside forests, farmers face tough issues—one particular disease hits yields hard and destroys crops across the country.

To push things forward, Agrawal invited ideas from industry experts and stakeholders. “Share your suggestions on how the government can step in and speed up the process—we need to understand the sector better to make it thrive.”
