Ashoka University teams up with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences to boost research in meteorology, climate science, and environmental studies. The two signed a key Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to tackle pressing issues like extreme weather events.
This exciting partnership kicked off during Ashoka University’s 2nd Annual Workshop on AI/ML Methods in Weather and Climate Modelling. The event, hosted by the university’s Safexpress Centre for Data, Learning and Decision Sciences (SCDLDS), brought experts together to explore cutting-edge tech for better weather predictions.
By joining forces, IMD brings its vast operational know-how and rich datasets, while Ashoka adds sharp analytical and computational skills. Together, they’re focusing on sharper forecasts for heavy rainfall, droughts, heatwaves, and cold waves. The collaboration also dives into monsoon variability, climate risks, adaptation strategies, and how climate change affects agriculture and air quality.
The MoU opens doors for joint research projects, secure data sharing, and fresh interdisciplinary academic programs. Expect lectures, fieldwork, project guidance, and internships that let IMD students and researchers dive into real-world weather monitoring and forecasting. Plus, they’ll ramp up capacity building through workshops, short courses, and training in meteorological data analysis, computational modelling, and machine learning for climate science.
Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, IMD’s Director General, shared his enthusiasm: “This partnership will strengthen the culture of research and innovation in meteorology and climate science. By combining our operational resources with Ashoka’s academic expertise, we can develop tools and models that directly benefit society.”
Ashoka University’s Vice-Chancellor, Somak Raychaudhury, echoed the sentiment: “Ashoka is deeply committed to interdisciplinary research with real-world impact. This partnership with IMD will help advance climate science, enhance forecasting, and better prepare communities to adapt to environmental challenges.”
To keep things on track, a Joint Steering Committee with reps from both sides will monitor progress, review updates, and steer future work in weather forecasting and climate adaptation. This move promises big strides in making India more resilient to climate change.
