Violent caught-on-video brawl between customers and Connecticut Chipotle workers sparks police investigation
There was a lot of extra beef with that order. A video that surfaced online shows a violent confrontation at a Chipotle in West Hartford. The fight erupted at the chain’s New Britain Avenue location on Saturday and sparked a police investigation, according to WFSB.
In the clip, a customer throws an unknown item at the cashier, which ignites a scramble among several staff members behind the counter while other patrons watch in stunned silence. The employee responds by grabbing something from the counter in an attempt to throw it back, but is stopped by the customer; the other workers quickly rush in to help.
The aggressor then moves to the back, shoves people aside, and forces an employee to the floor. Meanwhile, a female customer’s companion clashes with a woman from the kitchen, exchanging punches while a third employee tries to break up the melee.
At one point a worker holds a man’s head against his chest, but the man still lands a few blows on the staff member. The footage ends with the two women yanking each other’s hair.
The reason for the altercation remains unknown. The West Hartford Police Department is looking into the incident, but no arrests have happened yet.
Chipotle’s top spokesperson for corporate affairs and food safety, Laurie Schalow, told CT Insider that the company’s primary concern is the health and safety of both staff and customers. She added, “We have zero tolerance for guests who mistreat our employees and fail to give them the respect they deserve.”
The episode is reminiscent of a brawl that took place at the DC location earlier this year, when a frustrated customer fought an employee after a mistake in her order. Footage from that event showed her carrying an empty bowl and hurling it into the kitchen, prompting a staff member to try to stop her. When the worker reached for the overflowing bowl, the woman pulled it back and slapped him, sending food strewn across the counter.
