Weight-loss drug Ozempic launched in India, priced at Rs 8,800 a month

On Friday, December 12, Novo Nordisk rolled out its hit weight‑loss medication Ozempic in India, charging customers starting at ₹8,800 for a month’s supply. The drug, which is a once‑weekly injection of semaglutide, is cleared for use in adults whose type‑2 diabetes remains uncontrolled even with diet and exercise. It comes in three strength options—0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, and 1 mg—delivered from a single‑use pre‑filled pen called “Novofine Needles,” designed to make subcutaneous injections painless. The initial 0.25 mg dose is priced at ₹8,800, the 0.5 mg version at ₹10,170, and the 1 mg dose at ₹11,175, with each pen holding four weekly doses.

“We’re proud to bring Ozempic to India,” said Vikrant Shrotriya, Managing Director of Novo Nordisk India. “The product’s global reputation, proven clinical results, and world‑class quality—backed by a solid supply chain—give Indian doctors a reliable new option for patients.” He added that the aim is to supply an innovative, accessible treatment that improves blood‑sugar control, supports weight management, and offers long‑term heart and kidney protection, all through a user‑friendly pen that only needs to be injected once a week.

Ozempic first received FDA approval in 2017 for type‑2 diabetes and has since been widely used off‑label to aid weight loss, thanks to its appetite‑suppressing effects. Novo Nordisk highlights that as a GLP‑1 receptor agonist, the drug lowers HbA1c, moderates hunger by acting on brain centers, promotes weight loss in diabetics, and cuts the risk of cardiovascular and kidney problems linked to diabetes.
