New Delhi, Nov 1 () – Coal India Limited (CIL) celebrated a big milestone today: 50 years since it was founded on November 1, 1975. In half a century, the company’s coal production jumped from just 79 million tonnes (MTs) to an impressive 781 MTs at the close of FY 2025, a ten‑fold rise that shows how the country’s biggest coal producer has grown.
The same five‑decade trend is visible in coal supplies. CIL supplied 78 MTs back in 1975, and that number climbed to 763 MTs in FY 2025 – a total increase of 685 MTs. These numbers put CIL at about 75 % of India’s total coal output, cementing its role as the core of the nation’s energy mix.
A key driver of the recent surge has been the company’s aggressive push over the last decade. Production grew from 494 MTs in FY 2014-15 to 781 MTs in FY 2024-25, a jump of 287 MTs – roughly 41 % of the overall 702 MT growth achieved since 1975. Off‑take also rose by 274 MTs (40 % higher) during the same period, from 489 MTs to 763 MTs.
“With 50 years of experience, we’ve kept our position at the forefront of India’s energy sector,” said a senior CIL executive. “The company’s performance underlines the Ministry of Coal’s focus on taking coal production to new heights.”
CIL still employs more than 220,000 people, making it one of the country’s largest corporate employers. It is also looking beyond coal. The company plans to add 3,000 MW of solar power by FY 2028, and it’s exploring critical mineral acquisitions and coal gasification projects, signalling a broader diversification strategy.
