From sewing machines to self-reliance: Jeevika Didis share their journey

Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the Bihar Rajya Jeevika Nidhi Credit Cooperative Federation Ltd. through a virtual event on Tuesday. The event took place at the Collectorate auditorium in Samastipur, where many women involved in Jeevika self-help groups (SHGs) gathered to celebrate this new step towards empowerment.

During the event, Member of Parliament Shambhavi highlighted the government’s strong commitment to women’s empowerment. She explained that both the central and state governments are dedicated to helping women in Bihar succeed. The Prime Minister has announced financial support specifically designed to help women called Jeevika Didis, who are part of the SHG program. These women will now have access to low-interest loans, allowing them to start new businesses or grow existing ones.

In Samastipur, the government will identify eligible women for this assistance and distribute funds to help them become more financially independent. Many women shared their success stories during the event.

Shubham Kumari, a local woman, told how her life changed after joining Jeevika. Her husband works in a private job, but their income wasn’t enough. With government support, she started a small business and now plans to expand. Similarly, Mamta Bharti also expressed her desire to grow her business using the new funds.

Anwari Khatun, another Jeevika Didis, shared her inspiring story. Her husband’s illness had affected their family’s income. A Jeevika group member encouraged her to join, and she took a loan to buy a sewing machine. Skilled in tailoring, she began earning and used a second loan of Rs 20,000 to buy another machine. Today, she trains young girls from her village and hopes to open a proper sewing training center soon. “Our financial situation has improved a lot,” she said happily.

The Jeevika Nidhi Credit Cooperative Federation aims to empower thousands of women in Bihar by providing financial help, confidence, and resources. This initiative encourages women to lead change within their families and communities and step towards a brighter, more independent future.
