Congress appoints state war room leadership ahead of assembly polls

The Indian National Congress announced new leaders for its State War Rooms on Tuesday, aiming to sharpen its game plan for the upcoming assembly elections.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge signed off on the appointments, and the party’s General Secretary K.C. Venugopal released a statement that made the news. The leaders will drive election strategy and coordination in their states from day one.

Key appointments

  • Assam: Amit Sihag is the new Chairperson. He will work with Vice‑Chairpersons Rhituparna Konwar and Santanu Bora.
  • West Bengal: B.P. Singh takes the chair, steering the state’s campaign.
  • Kerala: Harsha Kanadam is the Chairperson, ready to plan the Congress’ drive.
  • Tamil Nadu: B.R. Naidu leads the war room.
  • Puducherry: John Ashok Varadarajan becomes Chairperson, setting the strategy for the union territory.

These appointments hit the ground immediately. Congress wants to strengthen its organisational machinery and boost its campaign infrastructure a few weeks before elections.

Why it matters

  • In Assam, the BJP‑led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is in control under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The 2026 elections will test whether the NDA stays on top.
  • In West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Mamata Banerjee must defend its stronghold against a BJP comeback. Current tensions over allegations of corruption and border security keep political leaders on guard.
  • Kerala sees a tight contest between the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), where Congress remains a key player.
  • In Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) faces a challenge from an AIADMK‑BJP alliance and new actor‑led party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
  • Puducherry is ruled by the NDA coalition led by AINRC and BJP. With Chief Minister N. Rangasamy at the helm, the CDC and DMK see a chance to regain power in the territory’s small but volatile assembly.

The Congress is tightening its campaign structure ahead of the crucial vote. The new war room chiefs are expected to bring fresh energy and sharper coordination, helping the party target voters across these key states.
