Dan Garodnick, the city’s planning director, is a likely pick to serve as deputy mayor for housing and economic development when Zohran Mamdani takes office, according to sources.
Garodnick has been a key player in Mayor Eric Adams’s tenure—helping push through zoning reforms under the “City of Yes” program and approving 14 700 new units in Long Island City—so it makes sense that the incoming administration would consider keeping him on board.
Mamdani’s campaign has stayed tight‑lipped about a possible appointment, and transition spokesperson Dora Pekec said they’ll make any personnel announcements when the time is right. Still, real‑estate insiders say the appointment rumor has been hot in the market for weeks.
One source praised Garodnick as “very productive” and a star of the Adams administration. When asked at a Crain’s New York Business real‑estate event if he’d join Mamdani’s team, Garodnick answered with a casual “no news.” He added, “I’m very excited about the incoming mayor. He’s obviously got a lot of passion, and is somebody who is determined to do a good job. I think we should give him some space to make his decisions.”
Mamdani has announced that he will retain Jessica Tisch as police commissioner, a move that First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro hailed on 77 WABC’s “The Cats Roundtable.” Mastro said, “I think history will be very kind to Mayor Adams and his legacy. Crime is down to record levels.
That’s why his police commissioner got reappointed.” He continued, “Jobs are up to record highs. Let’s see if the socialist administration can keep that up. Affordable housing, which the incoming mayor ran on, has been produced at unprecedented record levels by this administration. Let’s see if the socialist mayor can keep that up,” he told host John Catsimatidis.
