100% US tariffs on branded pharma imports not likely to affect Indian generic drugs, says industry expert

India’s pharmaceutical exports to the US should dodge a big hit from the new 100 percent tariff on branded and patented drugs, according to industry experts. Sudarshan Jain, general secretary of the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA), shared this view in a recent chat with .
Jain explained that India’s shipments to the US focus on generic drugs and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). These aren’t targeted by the tariff, which only hits patented branded products made outside the US. “India sends about $10 billion worth of medicine to the US each year, and it’s mostly generics and APIs,” he said. “So, this order won’t really affect us.”
He stressed how crucial generic medicines are for keeping US healthcare affordable. Indian companies have long pushed back against tariffs on generics, arguing they would just drive up costs for patients. “If tariffs hit generics, patients feel the pinch with higher healthcare bills,” Jain noted. These drugs treat key conditions like diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and gut issues, helping meet major public health needs.
Jain pointed out the huge savings generics bring. He said 90 percent of generic products make up just 13 percent of the US healthcare system’s costs. Slapping tariffs on them wouldn’t solve anything—in fact, it could make treatments even pricier for Americans.
The tariff news comes from US President Donald Trump, who announced on Friday that his administration will impose 100 percent duties on imported branded and patented pharmaceuticals starting October 1, 2025. Companies can avoid it by setting up production in the US. As Indian pharma keeps supplying those vital generics, the focus stays on affordable access to medicines amid rising trade tensions.
