Three teenagers killed as unexploded ordnance goes off in Afghanistan

Kabul, Dec 1 (LatestNewsX) – In Uruzgan province, a device left over from previous conflicts detonated, killing three teenagers between 13 and 18 years old. Police spokesman Belal Uruzgani told reporters that the victims were playing with the object in Shirkhani, Char Chino district, when it exploded, according to Xinhua News Agency.

This is the third such explosion in Afghanistan over the last ten days. Separate incidents involving old ordnance have also taken a toll, with four people—including children—perishing and nine others wounded in a blast in Kandahar and in the northern Balkh province. Afghanistan remains one of the world’s most heavily contaminated countries, with millions of unexploded shells and mines leftover from more than forty years of war and civil conflict.

On November 26, the provincial police office released a statement that three children died and two were injured in a Banglades with a device found in Nahri Shahi district of Balkh province. The children had unearthed the object and played with it, causing the sudden explosion that killed the three on the spot and hurt the other two.

Earlier on November 14, spokesman Sediqullah Sediqi said that an old device in Badghis province caused the death of three children. The children had found what they thought was a toy, only to have it explode, killing all three immediately.

Local media reported that, by the end of 2024, unexploded ordnances had claimed 137 lives and injured more than 330 people across Afghanistan. Among the deceased were 125 children, 10 men and 2 women, while the injured included 264 children, 53 men and 16 women.
